Michelle, Jodi and I
explored CF on Tuesday morning. We begin by visiting the Library which
unfortunately was closed due to the weather. There were many fliers
posted on the door referring to activities during the school break. One
was Superhero day which was supposed to be later that day.
The next stop after this was Jenks
Park where we braved the snowy ground and walked to the top were Cogswell tower
is perched. We found the view beautiful and thought that it was a nice
place. Jodi whose brother used to live in CF told us that they light the
tower during the holiday season and it looks like a Christmas tree. We
also walked over to see City Hall which was next to the park.
Our next stop was Chocolateville; I was a little disappointed with this
one. The website I had looked at made it out to be this great park but it
was just a few signs on the side of the road overlooking the River. It was a very nice spot but I was hoping
for something more. The people can access the river here to use boats and
canoes. There where three other signs like this as well as a Welcome to
Chocolateville sign. The view of the bridge was nice and we did enjoy the
view. We then drove around a little trying to find the Fire and Police
station.
What I found most interesting was the amount of small businesses present in the
city. There were only a few chain stores that we saw most everything else
was a small business. I thought that this showed that the community
valued keeping business in town and I was happy to see all the different shops
and stores.
We did eventually find the Fire and Police station and were surprized at how
close it was to the High School. We wondered how we had missed it
before. We posed for pictures and then we went inside and spoke to the
friendly Firemen. One LT. spoke to us at length on how fire emergencies
were handled in CF and we learned a lot about the situation in CF. We
were shocked and dismayed that the funding had been cut so dramatically that
the 2nd engine co. had been closed down. The densely populated
city should have more fire crews not less. The LT. also told us a lot
about how they fight fires and explained why the 2nd engine co. was
important. The 2nd engine came in after the initial company
and hooked up the hoses and helped to contain the fire, with out them there is
a larger danger of buildings being destroyed as the main goal is to get people
out so the fires now burn longer and can set adjacent buildings on fire.
The Lt. also explained that a lot of the newer immigrants to the city are
unaware of fire codes and they respond to many homes where they find toaster
ovens with the doors removed used as a heating source. Also he explained
that they only had one rescue in the city and if they get multiple calls they
are unequipped to handle the situations. All in all I was shocked
at the lack of public safety because of the budget cuts to the fire department.
I enjoyed our adventure in CF and I felt that I learned a lot about the
city. I have a new respect for the hard work of Fire Fighters. The
city was nicer than I expected from my preconceived notions of CF. We had
been worried about the expected snow but luckily, the weather held until we
were leaving the city. Overall I very glad I did this scavenger hunt and
I’m glad I did it with friends it made the trip much more fun.
In answering the questions on the hunt I found this website handy

Cogswell Tower, built at the bequest of Caroline Cogswell as
part of her last will and testament, was designed by Pawtucket architect (and
Central Falls mayor) Albert H. Humes. It has been the symbol of the City
of Central Falls since its construction in 1904. From:
